Summary:A strength training dumbbell bar 301 incorporating strain measuring sensors 306 which are internal to the bar, electronics and a communications means, arranged such that the measurements of the multitude of sensors are combined to provide a measure which is indicative of the force exerted to lift the dumbbell bar independent of the rotation of the bar along its axis. The strain gauge sensors preferably are arranged to record shear strain at two planes interposed between the hand grip and each set of removable weights 302. The received measurements form one or more axes are potentiality combined into a single measure of the magnitude of applied force. The bar preferably comprises a wireless communication means to pass measurements to external computing devices.
