Summary: | Air filter 1 comprising foam filter element 2, which has inherent electrostatic triboelectric characteristics, and insulation element 7, which prevents discharge of electrostatic charge. The insulation element is affixed to a filter holder of an air treatment system. Friction, caused by air passing through the filter, generates an electrostatic charge which aids in the filtration of charged particles. The size of the triboelectric effect depends on the density, thickness, pore size and material of the foam. The foam element may comprise a plurality of layers with differing densities and thicknesses. The foam may be a polyurethane, polyester or polyether. The insulation element may be a polyethylene, polyester or ceramic material. The filter may also comprise a charge-improving element, such as zeolite or volcanic rock and an absorbing element such as an organophosphorus compound. |
