Summary:An infant monitoring system 200 includes a transmitting unit 210 comprising: a first microphone 212 receiving a sound signal having at least one characteristic; a second microphone 214 receiving a sound signal having at least one characteristic; and a processor 216 connected thereto. The first microphone 212 is spaced apart from the second microphone 214. The processor 216 processes the received sound signals to measure a first characteristic of the sound signal received by both the first microphone and the second microphone 214. The processor 216 may activate a warning signal when the first characteristic of the sound signal received by the first microphone 212 differs from that received by the second microphone 214. The characteristic of the sound signal may be a duration, an acoustic intensity, and/or a frequency of the sound signal. The system may further include a receiver unit 230 including a display 234. The system may be arranged to distinguish between background noise (272,fig.4) and noise from an individual being monitored (271,fig.3). The first and second sound microphones 212,214 may be located on a front and rear of the unit 210 respectively. Alternatively, the first sound detector (412,fig.6) may be located remotely from the unit (410,fig.6).
