Summary:A bearing assembly 36 for a vacuum pump comprises a magnetic bearing including rotated and static magnetic elements 44, 38 next to each other in mutual repulsion. The rotated magnetic element radially surrounds the static magnetic element which is connected to a bearing support 42 comprising a recess 48 and an opening 50 to receive an extension 52 of a rotor shaft 32 extending through the opening into the recess. An emergency bearing 54 in the recess surrounds the extension. The recess may be open in a direction opposite to the shaft. The inner diameter of the emergency bearing may be larger than the outer diameter of the extension. The radial distance between the emergency bearing and the extension may be smaller than the radial distance between the static and rotated magnetic elements. A sensor 60 may detect a contact between the extension and the emergency bearing and a control unit may generate a signal if the number of contacts exceeds a predetermined threshold. A Method for replacing the emergency bearing comprises replacing the emergency bearing through the recess without disassembly of the rotor assembly.
