Summary:A vehicle mounted Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system comprising a radar device 1 mounted on a vehicle comprising a transmitter 8 configured to transmit a radar signal, a receiver 16 for receiving a reflected radar signal from an object; a processing system 2 for controlling the transmitter and for receiving at least one of speed and position information for the vehicle. The vehicle moves along a designated route, the radar device transmits the radar signal over a pre-determined azimuthal range to detect objects, and when a reflected radar signal from an object is received by the receiver, the processing system uses at least one of the speed and position of the vehicle together with the instantaneous azimuth of the radar antenna to determine and then correct for a Doppler frequency shift of the received radar signal. The Doppler corrected received Signal, the range and azimuth of the transmitted signal at the time of detection of the FOD are used to determine the coordinates of the FOD. The speed and position of the vehicle is preferably determined by a GNSS system. The designated route preferably may be an airport runway.
