Summary: | The method of making a drill bit (10, Figure 1) includes providing a base portion 12 and a cutting portion 14 as separate pieces, and heat treating the cutting portion to form a cutting surface. The cutting surface includes braze material and abrasive particles. After the heat treatment, the base portion is attached to the cutting portion. The base portion may be attached to the cutting portion by welding or adhesive. The abrasive particles may be spherical diamond particles with a diameter in the range 300 to 700 microns. The heat treatment may include heating the cutting portion in a furnace, holding the furnace at a set temperature, and then cooling to achieve a cutting surface comprising braze material and abrasive particles. A drill bit includes a base portion and a cutting portion, with a cutting surface of braze material and abrasive particles. The cutting portion is formed separately to the base portion. A fixing means attaches the base portion to the drilling portion. The drill bit may be a hole saw 10 or a grinding pin (20, Figure 3). The drill bit may be used with a drilling tool operating between 500 to 30,000 rpm. |
