Summary:An ultrasonic transducer comprising a back mass 44, a front mass 46, an ultrasonic actuator 52, 58 arrangement held between the masses, and an ultrasonic horn 48 arrangement along a longitudinal axis of the transducer. Vibrations generated by the actuator are conducted into the front mass and horn along a vibrational energy transfer path and are amplified by the horn. One or more of the back mass, front mass and horn includes a plurality of openings 70 intersecting the energy transfer path to provide an increased mechanical compliance in a direction along the vibrational energy transfer path. The ultrasonic transducer may be a bolted Langevin transducer. The plurality of openings may pass through a portion comprising an annular wall. The transducer may have a maximum diameter of 15mm, a maximum length 40mm, and may form part of a surgical tool and be operated at a power of 10-1000 W cm-2.
