Summary:A bioptic barcode reader 100 has an upper housing 205 with a horizontally extending portion 210 containing a generally horizontal window 215 and an integral, unitary tower portion 220 extending above the horizontal portion and containing a generally upright window 225. A lower housing (250,fig.3) is secured directly to the upper housing, the two parts defining an interior region which contains an imaging sensor 310, at least one vertical 330 and one horizontal 255 output mirror, and an intermediate mirror 315. A seal 280 may be provided between the housings. A method of assembling a reader involves assembling a carrier assembly with the imaging sensor, an intermediate mirror, and at least one vertical output mirror mounted onto a carrier frame (305,fig.10). The frame is secured between the upper and lower housing within the interior region of the scanner. The horizontal output mirror is mounted in the lower housing portion. The reader may include a second imaging sensor also mounted to the carrier frame. The reader may include a user interface, speaker (355,fig.8), and a colour vision camera (360,fig.8).
