Summary:A stationary shoulder 10, e.g. for a friction stir welding (FSW) a T joint, can have a chamfered leading edge 110 and/or a radiused trailing edge 120. The chamfer angle may be in the range 40° to 50°. The chamfered leading edge 110 may be 10 mm to 20 mm. The radiused trailing edge 120 may have a radius from 10 mm to 20 mm. Two FSW tools, each comprising a stationary shoulder (10, 20 fig 5B) with a chamfered front edge and a radiused rear edge, may be used concurrently in welding corners of a T-joint. Each tool may have a rotating probe which can be plunged into a workpiece, when performing each pass of a welded joint (fig 5B).
