The system comprises: means 12 for memorising and/or transmitting to the system in real time and/or computing at the system the intended path 4, means 15 for measuring the actual position of the vehicle, a visual display unit (VDU) 11, arrangeable in use within at least the peripheral vision of the driver of the vehicle, means for displaying in real time on the VDU 11 the intended path 4 to be driven and means for displaying to the driver: at least lateral actual position of the vehicle's with respect to the intended path 4 and a return path 21 to the intended path. The system also comprises means to communicate whether the vehicle should speed up, maintain speed or slow down for synchronisation with the intended path. The current path being taken and the return path may be displayed via arrows 22, 23, wherein the relationship between the current path and the return path is shown by the relationship of their arrows, in terms of their angles and magnitudes. The return path may be indicated in a manner that it forms an invert Y with the intended path.
