More Information
Summary:This invention relates to carboxymethylcellulose (fibres) comprising an antimicrobial selected from a biguanide, a biguanide derivative, octenidine, taurolidine, or a combination thereof. Also disclosed is a wound dressing comprising the fibres, a woven, non-woven, or knitted material comprising the fibres, and a method of manufacturing the fibres. The fibres are manufactured by submerging fibres comprising at least 95 % CMC (dry weight basis) in a treatment solution comprising the antimicrobial and at least 70 % of a water-miscable organic solvent selected from C1-C4 alkanols, C3-C5 ketones, or a combination thereof. Also disclosed are CMC fibres (or a woven, non-woven, or knitted material comprising the fibres) containing an antimicrobial selected from a biguanide, a biguanide derivative, octenidine, taurolidine, or a combination thereof, for use in wound dressings, wherein: the antimicrobial is dispersed throughout the fibre polymer, or; wherein the CMC fibre polymer has not undergone gelation. Also disclosed is a non-woven material comprising entangled CMC fibres and an antimicrobial selected from a biguanide, a biguanide derivative, ocetenidine, taurolidine, or a combination thereof, wherein the material exhibits a conformability characterised by an overhang length of up to 6.5 cm in the long dimension, as determined by the Cantilever method described in ASTM D1388-08.
