Summary:A magnetic proximity sensor 10 comprises a switch assembly 12 which is received in a blind bore 14 of a body tube 16, and a magnetic assembly 18 which is movable in the blind bore. The switch assembly comprises a centre magnet 26 interposed between a primary magnet 20 and a biasing magnet 22 of the magnetic assembly. An operator 40 extends from the magnetic assembly and drives a moving contact 44 positioned between first and second fixed contacts 46,48. The blind bore has a uniform diameter; a sleeve or shim 28 is received in the blind bore and is in contact with the closed end 30 of the blind bore. The switch assembly is seated on the sleeve such that the magnetic assembly is surrounded by the sleeve. The sleeve may be a mu-metal and may space apart the primary magnet and the closed end. The switch assembly may be seated on a rim 32 of the sleeve. The first and second contacts may be respectively normally open and normally closed. The centre magnet may be repelled from the biasing magnet and attracted to the primary magnet. The sensor may be used to determine the position of valves.
