Summary:A composition comprising sulphobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) wherein the average degree of substitution (ADS) is 7.3 or more and wherein the composition comprises a range of individual degrees of substitution. Preferably, the ADS is 8 or more. Also disclosed is a composition comprising sulphobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) wherein the average degree of substitution (ADS) is 9 or more. The sulphobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin may be prepared under continuous flow conditions. Preferably, the average degree of substitution of the cyclodextrin derivative is determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with evaporative light scattering (ELSD). The sulphobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin composition may be used as a drug delivery system or a pharmaceutical excipient. A method of preparing a pharmaceutical composition is also claimed, comprising contacting the sulphobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin with an active pharmaceutical ingredient.
