Summary:A hair straightening apparatus comprises two arms 12, 14 pivotably coupled together at a hinge end, wherein the arms can be moved between an open and a closed position. A central pack 16, such as a power pack, is disposed between the first arm and the second arm and coupled to the hair styling apparatus at the hinge end. A biasing means (180, fig 14b) supports the central pack symmetrically between the first arm and the second arm. This improves the ergonomics of the apparatus and allows for a balanced distribution of weight. The biasing means may comprise a torsion spring 186 having a pivot and a leg attached to each of the arms. A further coil spring 204 may be attached between the pivot and the central pack. Alternatively the biasing means may comprise two coil springs (166, 168, fig. 12), or two leaf springs (170, 172, fig. 13), formed between each arm and the central pack. The apparatus is preferably battery operated, and the central pack is a power pack. Alternatively, the central pack may comprise a motor or vibration means.
