Summary:A control system for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) 34 of a diesel engine 28 comprises a controller 38 that receives an input corresponding to fill state of the DPF and determines if a regeneration of the DPF is desirable based on at least one predetermined criterion. The control system is configured to permit the inhibition of the regeneration until a predetermined event occurs and for up to a predetermined limit of inhibition occasions. The predetermined event may be an expiry of a predetermined amount of time or a vehicle shutdown. An off-highway vehicle 10 (e.g. a working machine such as an excavator) comprises an engine system including a DPF and the control system. A method of operating a DPF of an engine of an off-highway vehicle includes monitoring the level of particulates in the DPF, determining if a regeneration is desirable, and signalling to an operator using a visible and/or audible indicator 42 that regeneration is required.
