Summary:A two stage method of controlling access to a function by storing a set of access levels for a first and second stage, the access levels define a threshold for progressing through the first and second security stages 10. It then receives a user input that is representative of an access level, or difficulty, of the second security stage 12. It then selects the access level, or difficulty, of the first security stage in dependence of the user input for the second stage 14. That is, if the user selects a harder difficulty for the second stage, the lower difficulty is selected for the first stage and vice-versa. It then processes user input representative of an access attempt for the first security stage 16, such as entering a password, and then accesses the second stage in dependence on progressing through the first stage 18. Finally, the method indicates a positive or negative outcome of access to the function 20.
