Summary:An actuation assembly for a tubular string mounted barrier valve features a housing and a double acting piston 20 which is operably connected to a valve member (figure 1, 24) such that movement of the piston in a first direction opens the barrier valve and movement in a second direction closes the barrier valve. The housing also features a hydraulically operated valved manifold 42 which has an inlet pressure source 40 from within the tubular string 34 or from an annular space 38 about said tubing string. Where the manifold selectively directs said inlet pressure source to one of opposed compartments 16, 18 on opposed sides of said piston and directs another of the opposed compartments to a location 56 having at some point in time a lower pressure than said inlet pressure source. Optionally, the inlet pressure source is from a line extending through a production packer 32 into an upper annulus. Optionally, the manifold further has at least one indexing device such that after a predetermined number of said cycles of increasing and decreasing pressure, valves are reconfigured to change movement direction of the piston.
