Summary:A valve 46 for a positive displacement pump, includes a valve body 460 and a valve seat 461 each having engagement surfaces 460a, 461a which are configured, in use, to at least partially engage with one another when the valve 46 is in a closed position. The valve body is movable, in use, relative to the valve seat along a linear path of motion L from the closed position toward an open position, wherein at least a peripheral portion of the engagement surface 460a of the valve body 460 extends at an obtuse angle relative to the linear path of motion L in the direction of motion from the closed position to the open position. The peripheral portion of the engagement surfaced may extend from closed to open either perpendicularly or at an obtuse angle relative to the linear path. Preferably an inner portion 460b of the engagement surface may extend from closed to open at an acute angle relative to the linear path. A valve body, valve seat and pump are also claimed.
