A configuration of an environmental controller (520, Fig. 12) of an environmental control system (500, Fig. 12), is set. The system (500, Fig. 12) comprises an appliance (540, 542, 544-546, 548, Fig. 12) suitable for influencing environmental parameters at a premises. A user query from a series of user queries (210, Fig. 2) is displayed, at 110, on a display of a user interface on the controller (520, Fig. 12) and a user input relating to an appliance (540, 542, 544-546, 548, Fig. 12) to be controlled is received, at 120, at the user interface. An expected connection configuration of physical connection terminals (1410-1520, Fig. 13) based on the user input is determined at 130 and connections at the physical connection terminals are detected at 140. The user input is validated at 150 by comparing the detected connections with the expected connection configuration. A control setting may be altered if the detected connections match the expected connections and an error message (320, Fig. 3) may be displayed if there is a divergence between expected connections and detected connections. A computer readable medium comprising code to perform the method and an environmental controller are also claimed.
