Summary:A vacuum pump with a stator formed of two half shells 102, which contact along a longitudinal surface and define at least one pumping chamber, seals 20 are mounted in grooves 50 on the longitudinal surface, where the grooves are wider than the seals, and the seals include at least one deviation 27 from a longitudinal axis, the deviation pressing against one wall of the groove, which biases a portion of the remainder of the seal to contact the opposite wall of the groove. The deviation may be a bend or kink in the seal, or it may be a protrusion from the seal, the seal may have a consistent cross-section along its length, and the groove may have a consistent cross section along its length. The longitudinal seal may also interact with a seal which seals an end plate to the stator half shells, the seal may be in the form of an o-ring.
