Summary:(Figure 1 not shown) A kitchen appliance such as a food blender or food processor (1) has a mixing or cutting blade (3) situated on a shaft 4. Shaft 4 is connected to the motor (5) by flexing member 10. Flexing member 10 comprises two circular plates 11A and 11B with a helical spring 12 and silicone core 13 located between. The dotted lines and arrow in figure 2 show how the flexing member and blade can move. Rubber or other resilient materials can be used instead of silicone. The flexing member is used to dampen impacts from food on the blade 3. Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment where the silicon core has been replaced by a rod (20) of steel or hard plastic which can be inserted into a central cavity (14) to control the degree of flexibility of the flexing member 10. Further disclosed is a control system for adjusting the movement of the rotary tool or changing the geometry of the rotary tool in response to a measured physical characteristic of the rotary tool and a working medium.
