Summary:In a system for a vehicle, upper and lower limits of one or more parameters are established for each of a plurality of states of operation of a vehicle. One of the plurality of states for operating the vehicle is identified based at least in part on the parameters, data describing a human operator, and data describing an environment around the vehicle. A vehicle subsystem is actuated according to an operation mode corresponding to the current operating state. A method of control includes a step 705 of collecting environmental data and a step 710 of collecting operator data, indicative for example of whether the driver is distracted or drowsy. The invention may be aimed at providing a shared operation mode in addition to a manual mode and a fully autonomous mode.
