Method for tensioning a belt of a belt drive of an internal combustion engine not in operation

The invention concerns a method of tensioning a belt of a belt drive (10) which comprises, in the belt (10a),a first driving wheel (1) arranged on the crankshaft (1a) and a third wheel (3) arranged on a starter shaft (4a). A movable tensioning means (5a) attached to an active tensioner (5) is provid...

Summary:The invention concerns a method of tensioning a belt of a belt drive (10) which comprises, in the belt (10a),a first driving wheel (1) arranged on the crankshaft (1a) and a third wheel (3) arranged on a starter shaft (4a). A movable tensioning means (5a) attached to an active tensioner (5) is provided, which applies a force to the belt and is controlled such that a compression of the spring (6) is countered, so that a movement of the tensioning means under the load of the belt is hindered. The belt is excited to vibration in the contact zone by use of the starter so that the tensioner is moved further in the direction of the belt under expansion of the spring, whereby the belt is tensioned. The tensioner may be a hydraulic tensioner similar to figure 1 and the starter motor may be excited to move in a first direction only or both a first and second direction to rock or jog the belt into its resonant frequency. The torque applied to the belt may or may not be sufficient to rotate the crankshaft of the engine.
