Summary: | A method of forming a super hard polycrystalline construction comprises forming a pre-composite assembly comprising a skeleton 102 of a first material and a region of super hard particles 104 located in one or more voids in the skeleton, treating the assembly in the presence of a catalyst or solvent material at a pressure of 5 GPa or greater and a temperature to sinter together the particles to form a body of polycrystalline super hard material comprising a first region of super hard particles and an interpenetrating region of a second material forming a coating on at least a portion of the first region, wherein the second material comprises any one or more of the first material or an oxide, carbide or nitride of the first material. The particles are preferably natural or synthetic diamond grains. The first material may be titanium and the second material may be titanium carbide. A tool comprising a construction formed by the method of the invention may be for for cutting, milling, grinding, rock drilling or earth boring. |
