Summary:A top-facing tip clearance controlling device for a gas turbine comprises shroud supporting rings 33 coaxial with an external casing 29, abradable ring sectors 37 and a shroud 41 supporting the abradable ring sectors 37. An elastic means 39, preferably a spring, extends radially and is attached to the shroud supporting rings 33 for radially centering the abradable ring sectors 37 to the shroud supporting rings 33. The shroud 41 is located between the elastic means 39 and the abradable ring sectors 37 and has a temperature dependent volume. Means 43 for varying the temperature of the shroud 41 to adjust the tip clearance (j, fig 2) are preferably provided by thermally insulated ducts (55, fig 5) which provide the shroud 41 with a coolant fluid, or by an electric resistor 61.
