Summary:An image pickup device includes a pixel region having a plurality of pixels that are two-dimensionally arranged, the plurality of pixels each serving as a focus detection pixel and an image pickup pixel, and each capable of outputting a signal for focus detection based on phase difference detection; a plurality of microlenses 1201, each of the plurality of microlenses being arranged to correspond to respective photoelectric conversion units 1103 of the respective pixels; and a transfer transistor configured to transfer charges generated in the photoelectric conversion units, where the microlenses 1201 are orthogonally projected onto the corresponding photoelectric conversion units 1103 and the vertex positions of the microlenses are off center positions of the microlenses towards a direction away from a gate electrode Tx of the transfer transistor. Also disclosed is a similar image pickup device which does not require the transfer transistor but where the microlenses are provided on both an active pixel region and an optical black region.
