Summary:A modular portable device system includes a base portable electronic communication device 200, such as modular mobile telephone. A multi-pin connector array 431-439 accessible from outside the base device is configured to electrically connect to a mating interface on an add-on module when the two devices are docked. The application processor 417 of the base device communicates with the add-on module via one or more of a plurality of interfaces, each interface supporting a different data rate than the other interfaces. The processor may select one of the interfaces to use. The add-on module may also have a processor for performing certain functions when docked with the base device. The connector array may be used to transfer audio or video data.
