Summary:The measuring device has a housing 12 and a central measuring opening 14 that passes through the housing in a straight line and receives a work piece to be measured. The device has a measuring coil 16 disposed inside the housing which encloses the measuring opening and a coil carrier 18 positioned radially outside of the measuring coil which carries or holds the coil. The coil may detect induced eddy currents. The coil carrier is preferably fixed or clamped in place with the coil lying radially inside it. The coil carrier may comprise supports 20 that face radially inward to grip the coil. The device may comprise a heat shield 26 positioned radially within the measuring coil and which closes off the inside of the housing. The device may further comprise a cooling system 22 comprising a fluid such as water or air which is guided via a channel around the coil and/or heat shield. The device is able to function in rough and extreme environments, for example under great heat or in environments in which water or steam is found, such as in a rolling mill.
