Summary:A dual-mode crawler is disclosed for traversing a generally tubular target, typically an umbilical, riser or pipe. The crawler can effect a hand-over-hand action along the target and also effect a driven action, such as a push me push you action, along the target. The unit has two or more traversing units directly connected to each other by one or more linear actuators, preferably non-jointed. The crawler is particularly suitable for subsea use, for example with risers for transporting produced hydrocarbons. The crawler may also have a cleaning module or an inspection module. Also disclosed is a subsea tool for traversing a tubular target having means for monitoring the absolute or relative rotation of a crawler and for actively rotating the crawler, and a crawler with a frame having a central roller set and lateral roller sets selectively engageable with a tubular target.
