Summary:The invention provides a means of alerting an operator 3 when a valuable item 2 is lost or stolen, and assists in the locating of said item. The system can also be used to indicate when a young child or other vulnerable individual becomes separated from the operator 3. The system comprises a first unit carried by operator 3 and a second unit associated with item 2 or carried by a child or other vulnerable individual. An alarm may be activated 5,6 upon separation of the first unit and the second unit by a predetermined distance. In order to eliminate false alarms, the alarm is not sounded until a number of attempts at communication between the units have failed. The system may include a means for setting the predetermined distance.
