Summary:Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) may be prepared by polycondensation of a single monomer (4-fluoro-4'-(4-hydroxyphenoxy) benzophenone) (FHPB) (Methanone, (4-fluorophenyl)[4-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)phenyl]), in diphenylsulphone (DPS) solvent and in the presence of sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate. An additional monomer, 4,4-difluorobenzophenone (BDF) , in a small amount may be used to control the rate of polymerisation, act as an end stopper and/or to ensure the PEEK polymer is fluorine capped. The polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has a Tm of less than 340oC, preferably in the range 333oC-337oC and a Tg in the range 142-144oC. The process can be used to produce high quality, relatively light coloured polymers having a lower Tm than those produced using a standard PEEK process.
