Summary:A system and method are provided for updating a memory device, such as a non-volatile memory (NVM), in an operating system. The system may be an image forming device. The method involves establishing communication S3100 between the memory device and a data exchange module on a customer replaceable unit (CRU) installed in the operating system. The CRU may be a customer replaceable unit monitor (CRUM). The method further involves detecting S3200 data in the CRU component for updating the memory device, determining that the memory has not been updated with the data (i.e. that the data is new) S3300, and then updating the memory S3600 with the new data. An authentication scheme S3400 may be executed to determine that the new data is genuine. Also feedback data may be written S3700 to the CRU upon completion of the update of the memory device to confirm the update. The feedback data may be externally readable to facilitate inventory control and/or configuration control, by reading the feedback data upon return of the expended CRU to the manufacturer.
