Summary:A wireless device operates in discontinuous mode such that at least a part of the device is temporarily shut down so as to be unable to receive downlink frames (67) and is then powered up so as to be capable of receiving downlink frames. The device schedules the transmission time of an uplink frame (12,14) to occur when the device has been powered up so that it can receive a downlink frame. Received downlink silence insertion descriptor (SID) frames may be immediately echoed back on the uplink. Uplink SIF frames sent after audio frames cease may be delayed to coincide with the next receipt of a downlink frame, or sent immediately and retransmitted when the next downlink frame is received.
