Summary:A position determining device is provided for determining the position of an automobile 2 travelling on a roadway 1. A dataset is selected from map data stored in a memory device such that the selected dataset contains the determined position of the vehicle 2. A lane 4 of the roadway 1 in which the vehicle 2 is travelling is determined by means of data acquired from at least one optical camera 5. A determined lane 4 in the dataset is selected as the own lane 6 of the motor vehicle 2. The position determining device may be a GPS receiver. The memory device may comprise a vehicle navigation system. Lane determination may be achieved by means of lane marking detection in images taken by the camera 5.
