Kingdon ion traps and their use for the measurement of ion oscillations

An electrostatic Kingdon ion trap which has at least three inner electrodes 31 and an outer housing electrode 30. The potential distribution contains not only a term for a harmonic potential well in the axial direction z, but also a term for the potential distribution in the radial direction, which...

Summary:An electrostatic Kingdon ion trap which has at least three inner electrodes 31 and an outer housing electrode 30. The potential distribution contains not only a term for a harmonic potential well in the axial direction z, but also a term for the potential distribution in the radial direction, which contains, independent of the axial coordinate z, the equations for a family of Cassini curves of at least the third order. The invention extends the field of the electrostatic Kingdon ion traps in which ions can oscillate harmonically in the longitudinal direction decoupled from their motions in the transverse direction.
