Summary: | A composite part comprises a cutting element 21 which comprises super-hard cutting table 23, such as a disc shaped PCD cutting table, and a substrate 27, such as a cylindrical cemented tungsten carbide substrate, joined to each other, and with a metal or alloy layer 33, such as a cup-shaped layer drawn up around the cutting element 21 and cold isostatically pressed, adjacent to surfaces of the cutting table 23 and the substrate 27 so as to surround the join. The metal or alloy layer 33 and the surfaces of one or both of the cutting table 23 and substrate 27 are co-operatively shaped, such as using grooves 29,31, to create a mechanical bond, to prevent relative movement therebetween. The metal or alloy layer 33 may be used to secure the cutting element 21 within a tool body (41, Fig 6) while simultaneously protecting the join between the superhard cutting table 23 and the substrate 27. |
