Summary:Apparatus for consolidating one of more webs 100 containing thermoplastic material by plastic deformation comprises one or more energy source 2000 for increasing temperature at predetermined regions of the web 100, and a z-directionally orientated gap exhibiting a gap width aligned with the z-(thickness) direction of the web 100. The apparatus comprises a gap width adjustment adapted to apply pressure to the web 100 in the gap, and the gap is formed by circumferential ribs of a tubular anvil element 3000 of a first anvil comprising a tubular anvil element support structure 1100 and a counteracting second anvil 2000. The tubular anvil element 3000 may be flexible and helical. Independent claims are also included for a web comprising a plurality of consolidation regions (110, Fig 1A) having a non-circular elliptic shape in the x-y-orientation of the web and an indented surface in the form of ellipsoidal of frustro-ellipsoidal indentations in the x-z- or y-z-orientation of the web.
