Summary: | A tool component comprises a wear part 2 such as a silicon carbide cemented diamond (SCD) pick secured to a connection member 10 such as a steel cup which covers at least part of a surface of the wear part 2. The wear part 2 has a specified hardness and comprises a ceramic, a cermet or a superhard material or a composite of a superhard material with a ceramic or cermet, and the connection member 10 comprises a metal or alloy. The surface of the wear part 2 includes one or more depressions or projections such as grooves 8 and the connection member is pressed against that surface and follows the profile of the wear part so that relative movement between the wear part 2 and connection member 10 is substantially prevented at least during operation of the tool component. A braze alloy insert 15 between the pick body 13 and the steel cup 10 absorbs energy, improving impact resistance of the pick. Tool components described include picks, bearings and nozzles. A method of making such a tool component and also a segmented tool component such as a nozzle comprising adjacent tool components secured together are also described. |
