Summary:An apparatus and method are disclosed in which items are separated, or spread out, in a steam of fluid consisting of passing fluid containing the items into a gulley of a flume device, flowing the items into a downwardly sloping ramp 24 with diverging side walls. This causes the items to spread out across the width of the ramp, after which they are discharged from a chute connected to the ramp. The apparatus and method may find application in the separation of thin slices of potato chips, in oil, prior to a microwave cooking process.
