Summary:A gear shift lever 1 of a motor vehicle with a damping device 2 is provided. The damping device 2 damps the returning of a reverse gear blocking element 5 in the axial direction of the gear shift lever 1 into a blocking position. For this, the damping device 2 has a first rigid ring element 6 in the axial direction of the gear shift lever 1, and has projections 7 distributed on the periphery in axial direction. In addition, the damping device 2 has a second rigid ring element 8, which has recesses 9 in the region of the projections 7 of the first ring element 6. Between the first and the second rigid ring element 6, 8 a resilient ring element 12 is arranged which is elastically deformable between the projections 7 of the first rigid ring element 6 and the recesses 9 of the second rigid ring element 8 on the returning of a reverse gear blocking element 5.
