Summary:A vacuum cleaner (10, Fig 1) comprises a base assembly (14) comprising a suction nozzle 38 with a height adjuster including a ratchet mechanism and a foot pedal 172, 354 pivotally mounted to a housing 28, (30). The foot pedal 172, 354 is adapted to move the ratchet mechanism to the raised position by pivoting the pedal 172, 354 in a first direction, and to move the ratchet mechanism to a lowered position by pivoting the pedal 172, 354 in a second direction. Ratchet mechanism may comprise a drum 168 including a plurality of detents 170, and a first actuation rod 174 that selectively registers with the detents 170. There may be a second actuation rod 176 that retains the drum 168 in a predetermined position.Alternatively, ratchet mechanism may comprise a linear track 243, and foot pedal 354 may move the actuation rod 356 in a first or second direction, depending on where pressure is applied to the pedal 356.
