Summary:Sensors 5 for obtaining data relating to the structure of the region 1 are deployed on ice bodies 4 (e.g. iceberg, ice sheet, ice floe) which move as a result of natural drift. The sensors 5 are used to obtain data at different locations resulting from movement of the ice bodies 4) with respect to the region (1). The sensors 5 may be passive seismometers which respond to ambient noise, for example resulting from cracking or colliding of the ice bodies 4, 24. Alternatively, the sensors may measure gravity, gravity gradient, magnetic field, magnetic field gradient, or may be magnetotelluric or electromagnetic sensors. Each sensor 5 may contain a controller, GPS receiver, memory and a transmitter/receiver. The sensor may be placed on the ice body from a vessel, hovercraft or helicopter.
