The apparatus6comprises a substantially cylindrical housing9defining an opening for receiving a boot attached to a pre-filled syringe, a plurality of fingers11arranged within the housing and being deflectable in a substantially radial direction by the boot3when the boot is inserted into the housing, ends of the fingers11being provided with respective formations16for snapping into a channel formed at the junction of the boot3and a shoulder of the syringe1, and a collar13arranged to slide over the fingers11between a first position in which the fingers are free to deflect and a second position in which such deflection is prevented.
