A manually operated breast pump is provided, comprising: a flexible insert for engaging a breast of a user 600, 6600; a housing 500 for sealingly engaging the flexible insert 600; a holder 700 for sealingly engaging the housing 500 and the flexible insert 600, and providing an air volume in fluid isolation from breast milk passing through the flexible insert 600; and a pump mechanism for sealingly engaging the holder 700. The pump mechanism has a handle 300, 6400 extending in an upward direction from the holder 700, and a vacuum chamber. The vacuum chamber is in fluid communication with the air volume of the holder and the handle 300, 6400 has a grip above a pivot point and a lower end below a pivot point. The handle 300, 6400 is adapted to move by exerting a pressure on the grip to move the grip toward the housing 500 and the breast of the user to create a negative and positive pressure communicated to the flexible insert and thereby on the user's breast. The pump may have a pair of handles 6400.
