Summary:The dock consists of a base unit 14 and a separable, portable unit 12. The portable unit comprises a docking connector 28 for an external audio source 10, an MP3 device or similar portable media player. It also includes loudspeakers 38, 40, 42, a battery power source 26, other audio sources 32, 34, 76 and an electronic interface 36 for coupling to the base unit. The base unit includes an external power input 58, a bass loudspeaker or subwoofer 46 and an electronic interface 44 matching that of the portable unit. The portable unit is operable in a first mode independent of the base unit in which an audio signal from the external audio source is played via its loudspeakers 38, 40, 42, and in a second mode in which an audio signal from the external audio source is played via the loudspeakers of the portable unit and via the loudspeaker of the base unit. The base unit provides a power supply to the portable unit via the electronic interface to allow recharging of the battery power source.
