Summary:The application discloses an apparatus for use in transmitting signals from within a wellbore to the surface. A sensor 170 is located within the wellbore, from which information is transmitted to the surface via a cable or wire 140 that is inserted into a groove or channel 121, 111 on a surface of a casing section. The groove acts so as to protect the cable as the equipment is run into the wellbore. The cable may be sub-flushed across the connection between first and second casing sections. The grooves may be enlarged at the ends of the casing strings so as to reduce the need for exact alignment of the casing strings. The system may be used with a drilling with casing system.
