Summary:A method for controlling the operation of an engine connected to a manual transmission is disclosed in which the engine is automatically stopped 600 and started 900 based upon one of several predetermined conditions 500 each of which includes one or more driver controlled motor vehicle variables such as the state of a transmission, the position of a clutch pedal, the position of a brake pedal and the position of an accelerator pedal. The engine may not be switched into one of the stopped states unless at least one driver controlled variable has been determined to exist for a predetermined time. The engine may be switched from each of the stopped states to an engine restarted state if at least one predetermined engine start condition 800 related to the respective stopped state is determined to exist.
