Summary:A luminescent material which comprises (A) a conjugated polymer having an aromatic ring in the main chain and (B) a compound which luminesces in a triplet exited state, characterized in that in the polymer (A), the difference in energy between the vacuum level and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level in the ground state each calculated by an arithmetic chemical technique is 1.3 eV or the difference in energy between the vacuum level and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level in the ground state each measured experimentally is 2.2 eV or larger, and that the material satisfies the following requirement (1): Requirement (1) ETA - ESAO > ETB - ESBO wherein ESAO is the energy of the polymer (A) in the ground state; ETA is the energy of the polymer (A) in the minimum excited triplet state; ESBO is the energy of the compound (B) in the ground state; and ETB is the energy of the compound (B) in the minimum excited triplet state.
