Summary:A cooling system for an internal combustion engine comprises a cooling circuit including passages formed in a cylinder block 6 and in a cylinder head 10 of the engine and at least one conduit connecting the passages in the cylinder block and cylinder head to an inlet to a pump 1 used to circulate the coolant through the cooling circuit, where the pump is a variable flow rate pump controlled by an electronic control unit. The coolant passages in the cylinder block are connected by a first coolant supply conduit 5 to an outlet from the pump, the coolant passages in the cylinder head are connected by a second coolant supply conduit 4 to an outlet from the pump, and the flow through at least one of the first and second coolant supply conduits is controlled by an electronically controlled flow control valve 2, (103, figure 2) operably connected to an electronic controller which is used to control the opening and closing of the electronically controlled flow control valve. The flow through the other of the first and second coolant supply conduits has a predetermined flow restriction 3, (102, figure 2) to prevent unlimited flow therethrough. In this way, the flow through the cylinder block 6 and the cylinder head 10 may be independently controlled. The flow restriction may be formed by an orifice or by the use of a coolant supply conduit having a relatively small cross-sectional flow area. The electronic controller is preferably operable to monitor the outputs from a cylinder block temperature sensor 26 and a cylinder head temperature sensor 27 in order to control the cooling system.
