Summary:A whipstock assembly includes a counterweight 2, whipstock body 8 and a neutraliser 11 releasably securable to the whipstock body 8. The neutraliser 11 has a centre of gravity opposite the whipstock centre of gravity. The neutraliser 11 has a wedge member having an inclined upper surface engageable and connectable with an inclined lower surface of the whipstock body. A detaching mechanism including shear pins 7 allows the neutraliser 11 to be released from the whipstock to be retrieved to the surface. The apparatus is said to allow a whipstock to be positioned at a desired azimuth within a wellbore.
